Music Analysis

Real human being
And a real hero

Back against the wall and odds
With the strength of a will and a cause
Your pursuits are called outstanding
You’re emotionally complex
Against the grain of dystopic claims
Not the thoughts your actions entertain
And you have proved to be

A real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being

A pilot on a cold, cold morn’
One-hundred fifty-five people on board
All safe and all rescued
From the slowly sinking ship

Water warmer than, his head so cool
In that tight bind knew what to do
And you have proved to be

A real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being and a real hero
Real human being

Real human being
Real human being

I’ve chosen this song because I’m wanting to use this song as my final song for this project. The song is part of a soundtrack of the film “drive” and so I want to illustrate key points of the film alongside this soundtrack. from doing some research that there are two meanings to this song. The first is that the song is actually about a real event that was about a US pilot, Chesley Burnett who successfully performed an emergency landing onto a Hudson river which saved a 155 lives. So in that sense the song is very literal. Another meaning is that the song is about

“You must be willing to look beyond peoples faults and misgivings in order to summon the will to save them. ”

The song is a synth pop song that is quite slow, relaxing and it has a very clear electronic beat. The song feels like an emotional song because of the singers tone and because of how slow it is. The song is probably most famous for being the main soundtrack for the film “drive” which is emotional at time.

The visuals I came up with that are in the image below are very literal but there are far more better visuals that I’d like to do for this song. for example I could illustrate all the key and emotional parts of the film or I could illustrate the event that it was written for which I imagine would be very difficult. Whatever it is that I draw it has to have a happy sad emotional feel to it.

“Learn To Fly”

Run and tell all of the angels
This could take all night
Think I need a devil to help me get things right

Hook me up a new revolution
‘Cause this one is a lie
We sat around laughing and watched the last one die

Now I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright
I’m looking for a complication
Looking ’cause I’m tired of lying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high.

I think I’m done nursing the patience
It can wait one night
I’d give it all away if you give me one last try

We’ll live happily ever trapped if you just save my life
Run and tell the angels that everything’s alright…

I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright
I’m looking for a complication
Looking ’cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high.
Make my way back home when I learn to…

…fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own
Fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone
Try to make this life my own

I’m looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright
I’m looking for a complication
Looking ’cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home when I learn to…

…looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright
I’m looking for a complication
Looking ’cause I’m tired of trying
Make my way back home when I learn to fly high.
Make my way back home when I learn to fly.
Make my way back home when I learn to…

The second song I chose is “Learn To Fly” by Foo Fighters. This is a typical rock song (drums, Electric guitar and singing) and it has a medium pace but it isn’t a heavy rock song and to me its a happy, uplifting song.

The song lyrics are very clear and can mean something different for every person. I think it is about how he is trying to break free of a life style, but he wants to have fun in life and have an interesting life but he doesn’t want it to be wasted and instead be worth while. There are also points in the song when it sounds like he is talking to a girlfriend or a current wife because he is asking for second chance and that he wants to be saved by them. He also says,

“fly along with me, I can’t quite make it alone”,

Again this line implies that he wants her to stay with him and join him in his adventure/life.

The visuals for this song would be quite easy ones to come up with. the first one could be a drawing or an animation of Dave Grohl trying to fly with help from angels. The next one could be him sat done in a street looking exhausted while looking up to the sky which visualizes the chorus. The next verse could be visualized as him in a dire situation reaching out for his companion’s hand  visualizing him asking her to save his life but obviously he doesn’t mean it in a life or death situation but more in a emotional and lifestyle way.
