Music Analysis

For this activity we listened to three songs by different music artists and took notes about the songs lyrics throughout the song. We recorded on things such as the type of song, the feel of the song, its story, its message and what emotions it gave off and created. After listening to the song once we then went on to listening to the song again but this time we drew sketches based on whatever lyrics we heard.

For this blog post we were asked to go into more detail for two of the three songs so I chose to do “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster The People and “Penny Lane” by The Beatles.photo 1 (5)photo 2 (5)

“Pumped Up Kicks”-Foster The People

Robert’s got a quick hand
He’ll look around the room
He won’t tell you his plan
He’s got a rolled cigarette
Hanging out his mouth
He’s a cowboy kid

Yeah he found a six-shooter gun
In his dad’s closet, in the box of fun things
I don’t even know what
But he’s coming for you, yeah he’s coming for you

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Daddy works a long day
He be coming home late, and he’s coming home late
And he’s bringing me a surprise
‘Cause dinner’s in the kitchen and it’s packed in ice

I’ve waited for a long time
Yeah the sleight of my hand is now a quick-pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
Then say, “Your hair’s on fire, you must’ve lost your wits, yeah?”

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Run, run, run, run, ru-ru-ru-run, run, run
Ru-ru-ru-run, run, run, run
Ru-ru-ru-run, run, run, run, run, run

[Whistling]

[Chorus x4:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet

The song pumped up kicks was basically about a guy who found a gun in his dad’s closet which he then goes onto use on a school of kids who have “pumped up kicks”. At the beginning of the song, the song describes the shooter as a “cowboy kid” which a “quick hand” as in a quick draw for whipping out a  a gun.
The song has a very happy and upbeat feeling to it but the lyrics are actually dark and sinister. So the happy and uplifting beat is masking the depressing and deep lyrics.
Pumped Up Kicks could have a view illustrations to visualize it. One drawing could be of the cowboy kid with his cigarette and quick hands drawing his revolver out. Another scene could be all the kids that have the nice shoes or “Pumped up kicks” running away from the shooter while the bullets are chasing them. The other scene could be of his dad returning home late from work as the song says that his dad works a long day

“Penny Lane” by the beatles
In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs
Of every head he’s had the pleasure to know
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar
The little children laugh at him behind his back
And the banker never wears a mack
In the pouring rain, very strange

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back

In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen
He likes to keep his fire engine clean
It’s a clean machine

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes
A four of fish and finger pies
In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout
The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And though she feels as if she’s in a play
She is anyway

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer
We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain, very strange

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
Penny Lane

The song “Penny Lane” is about a normal suburban street within a city. The song is describing what he is seeing as he is walking down the street such as the barber showing off all the haircuts he has done, the banker standing next to his motorcar, the fireman with the picture of the queen in his pocket and his clean fire engine and the nurse selling poppies at the roundabout. These are all the scenes that the song describes and it’s described in a nostalgic way as if it’s where he grew up or where he wants to be which paints it as a happy place to be.
To visualize the lyrics I’d draw out each of the events that he describes in the verse such as the barber cutting somebody’s hair, or the firefighter cleaning his truck or the nurse selling poppies.
